Most family dental insurance plans follow the “100-80-50” model, which looks something like this:

• Preventive care is covered 100% (checkups, cleanings, X-rays)
• Basic restorative care is covered 80% (fillings, bonding)
• Advanced restorative care is covered 50% (crowns, pulp therapy, extractions)

So, the best way for most parents to use their plans is to primarily pay for preventive care. These services often require little to no out-of-pocket expense, plus they dramatically lower the chance your child will need a more extensive (and expensive) treatment in the future.
