\u201cWhen do I get my braces off?\u201d This is a great question and one that you should ask your orthodontist often, specially during the final or \u201cbite phase\u201d of the treatment. \u00a0At this point in time, the crowded, crooked teeth should be\u00a0gone. It is during this\u00a0final phase that the bite is corrected so that the results will be healthy and stable.<\/p>\n
The following questions will help you understand how close you are to being done:
\n– \u00a0Are the teeth straight?
\n– \u00a0Are the spaces between the teeth closed completely?
\n– \u00a0Do the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth appropriately?
\n– \u00a0Are the upper teeth resting on the corresponding ones in the lower?
\n– \u00a0Is the overbite or underbite corrected?<\/p>\n
Patience is critical as you don’t want to pressure the orthodontist to take them off until the treatment plan has been totally completed. \u00a0You will be throwing money away as the teeth will tend to return to their original position over time if the treatment is not fully complete.<\/p>\n
There are times when\u00a0the the braces are removed because\u00a0the teeth “appear” to look good but they are really not and unlikely to stay straight after the braces are removed. \u00a0If you feel that is your case, ask the orthodontist to review\u00a0the improvements\u00a0that have been\u00a0achieved by showing you a panoramic X-Ray before and after treatment. \u00a0If you notice crooked roots or the mid line not straight in the most recent one: you are not done. \u00a0If you have questions or want\u00a0additional guidance, consult your pediatric dentist or call Dr. Rojas.<\/p>\n
